Managing Editor, Religion Unplugged

Religion Unplugged, a part of The Media Project, is a leading non-profit news platform dedicated to providing thoughtful, balanced and impactful coverage of religion, faith, and spirituality around the world. Our mission is to explore faith in public life and in people’s lives, offering in-depth reporting, analysis and commentary that informs, engages and inspires our global audience. We also believe in the power of journalism to foster understanding and dialogue on some of the most pressing issues facing the U.S. and the world.

Job Overview:

We are seeking a dynamic, experienced and passionate Managing Editor to lead our editorial team. This person will be responsible for overseeing the day-to-day editorial operations, ensuring high editorial standards and guiding the content strategy for our website. The Managing Editor will play a crucial role in shaping our voice, refining our editorial vision and leading a team of freelance contributors spread out across the world. This position that requires both editorial expertise and management abilities. The ideal candidate will have a deep understanding of religion and its global impact, a commitment to ethical journalism and a proven track record of producing/editing compelling content.

Key Responsibilities:

— Reports to the Executive Editor.

— Helps lead editorial planning and strategy, ensuring content is high-quality, well-researched, and aligned with the organization’s mission and values.

— Oversees content production, including assigning, editing, and publishing articles across a variety of topics related to religion, spirituality, and faith.

— Supervises, mentors and supports a team of writers.

— Edits and proofreads articles for clarity, accuracy, consistency and tone. Ensures all content meets editorial guidelines and ethical standards.

— Ability to write occasional stories on deadline whenever needed.

— Expected to work nights and/or weekends depending on breaking news.  

— Fill in for the executive editor when he is on vacation.

Qualifications:

— At least five years of editorial experience, with at least two years in a leadership or management role. Experience in religion or non-profit journalism strongly preferred.

— Exceptional writing and editing skills.  

— Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects.

— Proficiency in digital publishing tools, content management systems and social media platforms. Experience with SEO and web analytics tools a plus.

— Knowledge of U.S. and world issues, especially as it pertains to matters of faith.

— Proficiency in Spanish or other second language a plus.
